Buried Past: Volk, Pieter's treasure, and the prayer book
Follow Volk's requests and sparring lesson, retrace Pieter's route from Parlita, recover his legendary garb, and resolve the prayer book objective after opening the chest.
This guide discusses story outcomes. Outcome details are folded where possible; open them when you are ready.
Pieter's treasure in Buried Past is buried at an old family campsite. Volk supplies the lead, but his conversations develop across return visits, and opening the chest starts another part of the investigation. If your journal already asks you to retrace childhood memories, skip straight to the Parlita landmarks below.
Follow the beer story to Volk
At Maragir Crossroads, speak to the merchant who recognises Coen as Pieter's son. Ask about Pieter's visits and purchase the beer he mentions. Follow the new journal lead to Pieter's secret destination in the woods.
Volk initially treats the visitor as a threat. Complete that encounter, identify yourself when the conversation resumes, and accept the chance to talk inside. Hand over the beer during the visit. The confrontation on arrival and the later, agreed training match are separate events; meeting him once does not cover the lesson.
Complete the current request and return for training
Check what Volk currently wants before trying to advance the treasure conversation. Complete that request and report back. When he specifically asks you to return tomorrow, come back on a later visit; repeatedly choosing the same conversation does not satisfy that instruction.
The two Bilibili playthroughs show the following requests. Use them to recognise your current stage. The footage does not establish that every individual chore is a mandatory prerequisite for the treasure.
| Request in progress | Where to act and how to follow up |
|---|---|
| Chop wood | Work beside the shed near the house, then tell Volk it is done |
| Deal with nearby wolves | Inspect the traps and follow the deer trail and remains towards the cave; report the outcome |
| Help his aching back | Read the recipe on the shelf, follow the downhill riverbank objective for ingredients, then prepare and deliver the medicine |
| Stop the draught | Board the window beside his bed and return to the conversation |
When his stories turn to fighting alongside Pieter, accept the offered sparring match. Once Volk concedes, finish the follow-up conversation and ask about the technique he promised. This is the Artery Strike lesson, and the treasure discussion follows during this part of the relationship. The second playthrough, P24 at 04:30–11:15, shows the match, lesson, and treasure lead together.
Suggest the childhood berry clearing
Agree to investigate what happened to Pieter's old earnings. When discussing possible hiding places, suggest the hilltop clearing where the family picked berries. That memory narrows the search to the Parlita area.
Your dialogue can differ if you have already visited the clearing. In the second recording, Coen says he has recently been there. That discovery still leaves the actual investigation and excavation to do, so return and check the campsite.
Follow the landmarks from Parlita
Begin at Parlita's bakery if the clearing is unfamiliar. Let Coen finish each recollection and check the next objective before moving away. The route is easier to follow as a chain of landmarks:
- Pause outside the bakery. The memory concerns buying food for the journey and preparing to leave.
- Visit the nearby well. After recalling the waterskins, follow the departing road southwest.
- Pass the old house on the main road. The story about an unfriendly dog confirms this part of the route.
- Find the wooden roadside shrine. Leave the main road around this landmark and look for the conspicuous group of large rocks.
- Work uphill through the rocks. Coen remembers a meadow above a rock face; follow the accessible slope towards it.
- Investigate the old campfire. Use Focus around the clearing to locate the buried object and advance to excavation.
Inspect the chest and keep the prayer book
Excavate the site and examine the objects in the chest. The legendary reward is Pieter's Garb, a light chestpiece. An automatic English subtitle renders the name as “Scarf”; the equipment panel identifies it as clothing for the chest slot.
Its affixes support human health, weapon critical hits, and human health restoration. Compare those benefits with your daytime equipment using your own item's level and values.
There is no sack of gold waiting beside the clothing. Read the letter and prayer book, then follow the new monastery lead. The missing money is part of the investigation, so reloading and digging again will not answer it.
Visit the monks, then report to Volk
Follow the updated objective to the monastery. Show the prayer book to the monk and ask about Pieter and his money. Finish the conversation and follow him to the scriptorium to connect the book with what happened to the treasure.
Return to Volk and choose the conversation about your father's treasure. Explain what you discovered. If he subsequently asks you to visit another day, that points towards a further interaction with him; it does not mean that the treasure investigation failed because you found no gold.
For a stalled objective, check which of three stages you are in: a requested return visit to Volk, a memory that has not yet triggered along the route, or the prayer-book conversation after excavation. Each has a different place to resume.
